20 things I wanna do for 2020

2020! You're finally here!

I've been waiting for you. I don't think I've ever been more excited for a new year. Well maybe except 2000 hah. Not only is it a new year, but also the start (or end, however you want to look at it) of the decade. An opportunity to start over fresh. To really make something of this prominent year. The idea of not making something of 2020 just doesn't sit well with me so I'm determined to make it the best year ever.

Luckily I've gotten some practice with the past few years, planning out my goals, strategizing ways to achieve them and following through (for the most part). So now I'm eager to make some positive changes in 2020 and hopefully keep them for the next decade to come. I thought 20 goals would be daunting but when I break them down into categories, it's actually not that bad. Also, having a reason why and having a how prepared on how to carry out the goal has helped me in the past so I've decided to share all that with you.

The four categories I have broken up my goals into have to do with things I want to do LESS of, things I want to do MORE of, things I want to CREATE, and things I want to stay CONSISTENT in.

If you'd rather hear me talk through these things rather than read through them, feel free to watch my YouTube video here, otherwise scroll through:

Less is More:

1.) Accumulate less waste

WHY?
To lessen my carbon footprint and be mindful of the waste I produce.

HOW:
Cutting down on pre-packaged goods and single use disposable items. To do this, I've bought re-usable containers and buy most items in bulk to lessen waste. I bought a reusable water bottle and a metal straw that I carry with me everywhere.

2.) Less consumerism, especially with Amazon and fast fashion.

WHY?
Amazon is killing a lot of brick and mortar stores. Although online shopping can be convenient in a pinch, I have mad respect for stores that are passionate about the customer experience in person and I would hate to see that continually decline to the point of no existence. As for fast fashion, being that it's one of the largest pollutants in the world, I want to completely eliminate buying ANY fast fashion this year as additional clothing is not and never really has been a necessity. Fashion has always been a huge part of my life but its time for a change.

HOW?
Eliminate impulsive buying by pre-meditating all purchases monthly. Items I want to purchase has to go through a vetting process, determining if it's a need or want. If it is not needed, it will not be purchased.

3.) Minimize belongings.

WHY?
Having parents that hoard, I admittedly have adopted some of their hoarding ways. I still have paperwork from high school, VHS tapes that I have no way to play and just random items overall that I don't need or use. Having an excessive amount of things create un-necessary clutter that and takes up space that could be used for something else. Also, I'm taking a stab at van life and want all my belongings to serve a purpose and/or spark joy.

HOW?
By Marie Kondo-ing the sh*t out of all my things and scheduling time to donate, sell or giveaway belongings that I no longer need. I've been aiming to get rid of 3 things per day and either go to the donation stop or resell the clothes at least once a month, ideally once a week.

4.) Less procrastinating

WHY?
To lessen anxiety and respect the time of the people and/or projects involved.

HOW:
Not letting important tasks or responses to texts, calls and/or emails go past 24 hours by designating at least an hour block of time each day to ensure all tasks are accounted for or rescheduled for a time in the near future.

5.) Less doubts

WHY?
Doubting the possibility of something, especially your goals, does nothing to help you get to it unless you use it as a feedback mechanism to correct your thinking and investigate what needs to happen to lessen your doubts.

HOW:
Take the time to recognize any doubts and figure out how to make it into a certainty so that doubts no longer bog down the path to get to your goals.

More is More:

6.) More self-love

WHY?
This is something I've struggled with for as long as I can remember. I want to be more at peace with myself so I can do the things that I love without my own judgement. I want to be able to love myself in every way, shape and form. With or without make-up, on my best days and my worst days. And to simply be grateful to be alive in every moment.

HOW:
By taking good care of myself. Being kinder to myself. By not being too hard on myself if I'm not where I had planned to be and trust in the universe's timing.  By making it a point to check in daily, weekly and monthly to celebrate the victories and look at how I can improve.

7.) Read more books

WHY?
Reading books is what helped me discover new ideas and practices to improve my life and well-being. Learning other people's opinions and beliefs has helped me to shape my own and discover what my core values are.

HOW:
By aiming to read 1 book a month and setting aside time each day to do so. Also utilizing audiobooks to be able to multi-task while driving, cleaning and working out.

8.) Take better care of my health

WHY?
I'm getting to the age where health is a much larger concern than it used to be. I didn't go to the doctor at all last year so I wasn't as pro-active with my health as I would have liked to be. This year I want to change that.

HOW:
I've already scheduled all my preventative appointments for the year so I can start building relationships with the doctor's I have chosen. I'm recording my visits and making sure that I stay consistent with check up's by setting reminders and making it a point to monitor my health more closely.

9.) Drink more water

WHY?
I've always struggled to drink more water which has lead to chronic bladder infections in the past. I want to drink the water my body needs to stay hydrated.

HOW:
By getting a refillable water bottle that has timestamps of suggested water intake. Having this helps me to keep track of how much water I'm drinking and how much more I have to go throughout the day.

10.) Spend more time outdoors

WHY?
I feel like I've taken our planet earth for granted these past few years and I really want to make it a point to go outside and be in nature. I believe that connecting with nature has a grounding effect that makes me more connected with Mother Earth.

HOW:
By scheduling hikes or workouts outdoors at least once a week. Being more aware of the weather would help me to look forward to going outside on days that are much nicer without rain.

I am a creator:

11.) Create deeper relationships

WHY?
I want to create deeper relationships with mother nature, my family, friends, myself and the higher power because I believe that is what life is all about.

HOW:
By spending more time outdoors, calling my friends and family at least once a week, checking in with myself daily and making it a point to pray/meditate more. By recording how much time I take to this, I'll be able to see if I am at least maintaining my relationships and hopefully in turn make them even more meaningful.

12.) Build out a van

WHY?
I have been watching the #vanlifemovement for quite some time now and for years have wanted to join in. I've been looking for the perfect van and finally found one so I want to build it out to be sustainable for a cross-country trip.

HOW:
By finding a mechanic I can trust as well as making the time to design and build out the van. I watch a ton of YouTube videos on other van builds so I can gain inspiration on how I want to build mine out. Once I have a clear idea of what I want the van to look and feel like, I will make sure to schedule in some time to fix it up.

13.) Make more things

WHY?
As I've decided to lessen my shopping, I want to be more conscious of the things I buy and if I'm able to make it first. Entering van life, I also want to make sure I am only using bio-degradable products even if it means I have to make certain things myself. Like soaps, cleaning solutions and things of that nature.

HOW:
By researching on YouTube what others have made and using products I already have to make them. I found this video on YouTube and really want to try making this on my own:

14.) Make more music

WHY?
It's been such a long time since I've made music and I want to share a piece of my story through my songs.

HOW:
By setting aside time to either make my own music or search online for instrumentals I could use to tell my story.

15.) Co-create

WHY?
I think that creating with others produces a final product that surpasses anything I could make on my own.

HOW:
Reaching out to those of similar styles in music, taste and energy. Finding a time that works for all parties and making beautiful magic!

Consistency is key:

16.) Stick to a workout schedule

WHY?
Cause your girl wants abs before she reaches her mid-thirties this year lol.

HOW:
By aiming to work out at least 5 days a week and twice a day.

17.) Master a new skill

WHY?
I haven't learned something new in awhile and I really want to challenge myself to do so. Specifically producing music by learning the piano and basic chords.

HOW:
By setting aside at least 30 minutes a day to practice.

18.) Stick to a budget

WHY?
Other than losing half of my income this year, I just want to be more conscious of my expenditures so that I can keep track of what I'm spending on.

HOW:
By forecasting all expected and unexpected expenses for the entire year ahead of time and creating a plan around additional unforeseen expenses.

19.) Invest at least $500 a month

WHY?
My parents are reaching their retirement age and they both are struggling to retire early. I don't want to follow in those footsteps so I am investing now and as early as possible to prepare for the future.

HOW:
By redirecting $500 every single month out of my paycheck before it even hits my main bank account into a separate account that is used only for savings.

20.) Plan or record every single day

WHY?
If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Being able to see where my time is being used is helpful in making informed decisions on what moves I should make next, how I can improve my time management and be accountable for every single moment.

HOW:
By utilizing the daily planner I've created to fit my daily needs. I set aside time each morning to review my day, do a mid-day check in at dinner and review the day before bed as well as plan for the following day.

I want to help you reach your 2020 goals as well so I'm sharing my personal daily planner with you all for making it through the entire blog!

Thanks again for reading through the end, I hope you enjoy this little asset!
